Mzuri Farm, everything begins and blossoms with flowers, especially our much loved peonies. Peony season is the heartbeat of our operation: a demanding yet rewarding time that requires up to 12 hours a day, seven days a week, with every hand on deck. Each stem is harvested at the perfect moment, then carefully stored at a constant 2°C to preserve quality during transport. Only once the flowers reach our customers are the stems trimmed and placed in water, where they open into their full, luxurious beauty.

We are continually expanding our range to offer even more seasonal beauty throughout the year.

Rooted in a Love for the Land

Growing up on a farm instilled a deep love for the outdoors and working with the land. That passion led to formal studies in horticulture in the early 1990s, followed by a journey through retail, landscaping, and irrigation in Johannesburg, and later wholesale nursery operations in White River.

But it was the allure of peonies that truly reshaped our path. In search of the ideal climate for these high-value blooms, our family relocated to Himeville, beginning an exciting new chapter at Mzuri Farm.

Adapting to the Seasons

Our peony journey began with just over a hectare under cultivation. With each variety blooming for only about two weeks, we quickly diversified our plantings. By overlapping flowering times, we extended our harvest season to six weeks.

To meet growing demand and support year-round employment, we introduced hybrid varieties and imported tissue-cultured plants from Holland. Grown in tunnels, these allow for a more consistent supply while creating sustainable jobs particularly for local women.

Life on Mzuri Farm

Each day begins at sunrise with a weather check. Mornings are dedicated to harvesting and post-harvest care, while afternoons focus on order processing and meticulous packing for delivery across South Africa.

Farm life demands adaptability. We’ve navigated hailstorms, unexpected frosts, power outages, and even a jet fuel shortage that once threatened an international shipment. On Mzuri Farm, resilience and quick thinking are part of daily life.

Farming with Purpose

We believe in working with nature, not against it. Indian Runner ducks patrol our fields, naturally controlling slugs and snails and reducing the need for pesticides. When spraying is unavoidable, it’s done thoughtfully to protect pollinators—the guardians of our ecosystem.

Crafting Beauty Beyond the Field

Because peonies are still rare in South Africa, floral-inspired materials were difficult to source. So, we created our own signature peony fabric, inspired by our blooms. From this, we developed a unique range of handmade, locally crafted products, available in our on-site farm gift shop.

Mzuri Farm is more than a farm it’s a passion project, a working landscape, and a growing community rooted in resilience, sustainability, and the simple joy of flowers.

U-Pick Experience
From December to April, enjoy our U-Pick during shop hours. Bring a bucket for your flowers, a sunhat, and secateurs. Pick your own blooms straight from the field and take a piece of Mzuri Farm home with you.
