Heritage Plants is a specialist retail nursery situated on the scenic Drakensberg Gardens Road, just outside Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg.
Under new ownership since July 2026, Heritage Plants is owned and run by Paolo Slaviero and Kim Evans, who are continuing the nursery’s more than 20-year history while bringing fresh energy and new ideas to this much-loved local business.
With a particular focus on cold-climate, frost-hardy plants suited to the Southern Drakensberg, the nursery offers an extensive and ever-growing selection of trees, shrubs, roses, perennials, seedlings, herbs, succulents and other garden favourites. Around 85% of the plants sold are propagated and grown on the property, many from established plants that have already proven themselves in the local climate.
Paolo has a particular passion for plants, trees and unusual varieties and is continually expanding the nursery’s collection, with an emphasis on sourcing interesting, uncommon and hard-to-find plants for Drakensberg gardens. Kim shares in the new chapter at Heritage Plants, and together they are developing the nursery as a welcoming destination for gardeners, visitors and anyone who simply enjoys spending time amongst plants.
The property is also home to an impressive established garden, including a collection of more than 160 varieties of heritage and old-fashioned roses and over 60 varieties of camellias, which provide valuable propagation material for the nursery.
Visitors are encouraged to take their time, walk through the nursery and chat about their gardens. Whether you are an experienced gardener or have no idea where to start, the emphasis is on friendly, practical advice and helping customers choose plants that will genuinely thrive in our unique mountain climate.
In addition to plants, Heritage Plants stocks a selection of pots, concrete garden furniture, bird baths, statues, garden ornaments and other garden products.
Heritage Plants is also proudly pet-friendly, with our resident dogs often on hand to welcome visitors.
